An Introduction...

There’s something quietly magical about being on a crofting journey.
Maybe it’s the way the weather changes by the hour, the endless list of jobs that somehow keeps growing, or the simple satisfaction of standing at the end of the day with muddy boots and tired hands, knowing you’ve built something real. Crofting isn’t just about land or livestock — it’s about rhythm, resilience, and learning to work with the seasons rather than against them.
This blog is where we’ll share that journey.
The wins, the mishaps, the lessons we probably should have learned sooner, and the everyday moments that make croft life what it is. From broken fences and feeding routines to weather worries, practical projects, and the odd unexpected disaster, we want to document the reality of our life on the croft — honest, unpolished, and full of heart.
We’re not claiming to know it all. Far from it. We’re learning as we go, making mistakes, asking questions, and doing our best to create something worthwhile from the ground up. If you’ve ever dreamed of what is sometimes portrayed as a simpler, (not really the case) more grounded life — or you’re already in the thick of it yourself — you’re very welcome here.
So here’s to fresh air, hard graft, small victories, and the beginning of something special.
Of course, no croft is ever really about just the land — it’s about the people who call it home.
Our croft is very much a family affair.
At the heart of it all is me, trying to keep all the plates spinning while hamming nails into wood when required. Alongside me is my partner Maggie whose hard work, patience, and steady hand keep us moving forward even when the to-do list feels endless. Between the two of us, there’s always a project on the go, a plan being made, or a job that probably should have been finished yesterday.
Then my kids, Noah and Bethany who have grown up surrounded by open skies, muddy boots, fresh air, and the kind of freedom that only this way of life can offer. They’re right in the middle of it all — not so much helping anymore it’s more like they are taking over! While still learning, and making memories we hope will stay with them for life.
And of course the linch pins and glue that hold this fragile way of life together my parents
Gordie (the hi-viz hero) and Margaret (project manager).
No croft introduction would be complete without mentioning the sheep as much part of the family as anyone else. Whether they’re behaving themselves or causing complete chaos, they bring their own personalities, challenges, and joys to everyday life here.
Together, we’re building more than just a croft — it's in our blood and we hope that we can take on this privilege and gift we have been given and leave it better for the next generation.
